Ellerton, Porter Pace Wolverines at Yellow Jacket Invite

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team collected a pair of NCA Regional qualifying times at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday (April 3). The Wolverines registered 11 top-five performances in just their second outdoor meet of the season.
Making his outdoor season debut, sophomore Andrew Ellerton (Windsor, Ontario/Confederation HS) nabbed a regional-qualifying time of 3:45.91 in the 1,500-meter run, bettering the qualifying standard by 2.30 seconds. Ellerton also blazed a personal record in his third-place performance, shaving 1.38 seconds from his previous best, which he set at last season's Yellow Jacket Invitational (April 5, 2003).
Freshman Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin HS) also collected his first regional-qualifying mark of the outdoor season, running 14.20 in the 110-meter hurdles. Placing seventh in the event, Porter bettered the qualifying standard by 0.13 seconds.
The Wolverines continued their success in the hurdles as four U-M competitors recorded top-10 performance in the 400-meter hurdles. Junior Seth Waits (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Otsego HS) led Michigan with a third-place finish and a time of 52.46, his second regional-qualifying mark in the event of the season. Juniors David Battani (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) and DarNell Talbert (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel HS) followed Waits across the line, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Battani clocked a personal-best 52.74, shaving 0.81 seconds from his previous best time. Senior/junior Nick Meter (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) rounded out the Michigan contingent in the event, placing ninth with a time of 55.16.
The Wolverines will not be in action next weekend but return to competition Sunday, April 16, when they go across town to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the non-scoring Eastern Michigan Invitational.
