Joining former Wolverine Steve Shields as the only U-M netminders to earn All-America second team honors, Montoya was also named to the 2004 NCAA All-Northeast Regional squad and the All-CCHA second team. Montoya set a career best with 42 saves in Michigan's 3-2 overtime loss to Boston College in the Northeast Regional final (March 28).
Montoya was also recognized as the top goaltender at the 2004 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Finland. Montoya was an all-tournament goaltender after backstopping Team USA to its first-ever gold medal at the WJC.
The Wolverines have had at least one All-American in 11 of the last 13 seasons, though Montoya is the first since Mike Cammalleri and Mike Komisarek were named to the first team in following the 2001-02 season.
