WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team kicked off competition at the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships on Friday (May 14), competing in a pair of events on the first day of action at Purdue's Rankin Track.
Fifth-year senior Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS) was just eight seconds out of scoring in the 10,000-meter run, finishing ninth with a time of 30:03.64. After staying near the rear of the pack through the first few laps, the Wolverine captain made his way to the front, taking the lead on lap nine and staying out front for three laps. Stanko dropped off slightly as the lead pack began to speed the pace, but he made up ground in the final laps to claim ninth.
Also competing for the Wolverines was freshman Chris McHugh (Nokington, R.I./Bishop Hendricksen HS), who finished just two spots out of the final cut in the hammer throw preliminaries, marking 172-6 to place 11th.
The Wolverines will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, May 15) for the second day of competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. Events will begin with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m. EST/CDT at Purdue's Rankin Track.
