WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- University of Michigan women's golfer Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) advanced to the second round before being eliminated at the 28th U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship held Tuesday through Sunday (June 22-27) at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. Broderick lost 2 and 1 to Nara Shin Friday.
Broderick opened her Amateur Public Links Championship run Tuesday firing a qualifying one-over 73 in the first round of stroke play. She followed with a four-over 75 on Wednesday to give her a 149 stroke-play total - tying her for 54th overall and giving her a spot in the match play field of 64.
In her first match Thursday against Courtney Mahon, Broderick held a 2-up advantage through eight holes before two birdies by Mahon on the No. 9 and No. 11 par 3s squared the match with seven holes remaining. Mahon took her first lead of the match on No. 12, 1 up, but Broderick came firing back with a par on No. 14 to square the match for the second time. A follow-up birdie on No. 15 gave Broderick the lead for good as she won her first match 1 up.
After a two and a half hour delay in her second match against Nara Shin, Broderick fell down early trailing 3 up through the first eight holes. Broderick found a rhythm on No. 9 as she parred her next six to help her square the match with three holes remaining. Unfortunately, Shin capitalized on a pair of Broderick bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16 to take a 2-up lead, which would carry over to the 18th hole eliminating Broderick.
Broderick qualified for the Amateur Public Links Championship after dominating the field at her sectional qualifier May 25 at St. Andrews Golf Club in Overland Park, Kan. She fired a 74, eight strokes better than the runner-up.
Ya-Ni Tseng defeated defending champion Michelle Wie, 1 up, in the 36-hole championship match of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. For completed results, visit the Amateur Public Links Championship website.
In addition to Broderick's success at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship, Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) both competed at the prestigious North and South Women's Amateur Championship, held Monday through Saturday (June 21-26) at Pinehurst No. 2.
After tallying a 152 (73-79) stroke play-qualifying total, Olin advanced to the match play first round, but was eliminated by Maggie Simons, 3 and 2. Schmucker missed the match play field by three strokes after she tallied a 161 (79-82) total in stroke play.
