Ex-Wolverine Hayes Sits Second at Michigan Open

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan men's golfer Scott Hayes (1998-2001) is tied for second after 36 holes of the 2004 Detroit Newspapers Michigan Open held at the Bear at the Grand Traverse Resort. Hayes, along with former Wolverine Andrew Chapman (1999-2002) and current Wolverines Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) and Mark McIntosh (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS) made the cut to play in the final 36 holes Wednesday and Thursday (June 30 and July 1).
Hayes began his Open run with a three-under 69, following with a two-under 70 to post a 139 36-hole total. He finished just two strokes behind leader J.R. Roth who put up a 137 (67-70). Tighe is tied for 18th with a 146 total, firing back-to-back rounds of one-over 73.
After opening with a 79, McIntosh came back strong with an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 45th with a 151 total. Chapman is also tied for 45th with a 151 after firing rounds of 74 and 77. Former Wolverine Kyle Kilcherman (1999-2002) also competed at the Open, but missed the cut for the final 36 holes after carding rounds of 74 and 83 for a 157 total to tie him for 108th.
Hayes will start his third round at 9:57 a.m. off No. 1, as will Tighe who will tee off at 9:03. McIntosh and Chapman will start their third rounds off No. 10 at 8:27 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.
