TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan men's golfer Scott Hayes (1998-2001) finished fifth at the 2004 Detroit Newspapers Michigan Open held Monday through Thursday (June 28-July 1) at the Bear at the Grand Traverse Resort. Hayes was one of four past and present Wolverines to record a top-55 finish at the Open.
After opening with a three-under-par 69, Hayes followed with a two-under 70 to sit in a tie for second and make the cut for the final 36 holes. A third-round 73 dropped him down to sixth, but a 70 in the final round moved him up one position for a fifth-place finish with a 282 total. Hayes finished six strokes behind winner J.R. Roth (67-70-71-68/278).
Current Wolverine Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) tied for 22nd with a 294 total. Tighe's back-to-back rounds of 73 allowed him to move into the final two days of competition. He recorded a third straight round of 73 before falling back slightly in the final round with a 75.
Former Wolverine Andrew Chapman (1999-2002) cracked the top 50 as he tied for 40th with a 299 tally. He opened with a two-over 74, still managing to make the cut even after a second-round 77. In the third round, he fired his best round of the Open with a one-under 71, but a 77 finish in the final round gave him the tie for 40th.
Current Maize and Blue golfer Mark McIntosh (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS) tied for 54th with a 304 Open total. After beginning with a 79, he rebounded with an even-par 72 to make the cut. He followed with a two-over 74 in the third, and his final-round 79 gave the Wolverines four in the top 55.
Former Wolverine Kyle Kilcherman (1999-2002) also competed at the Open but missed the cut for the final 36 holes after carding rounds of 74 and 83 for a 157 total to tie him for 108th.
