Hurd Finishes 13th in 400-Meter Freestyle at Olympics

ATHENS, Greece -- Making his second Olympic appearance with the Canada men's swimming team, University of Michigan junior Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalger HS) finished 13th overall in the men's 400-meter freestyle on Saturday (Aug. 14) at the 2004 Olympic Games with a time of 3:50.81. It marks Hurd's highest finish in the Olympics as he came in 23rd in the 1,500-meter freestyle in the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia.
Hurd finished fourth in the fourth heat of the preliminary round behind Italy's Rosolino Massimiliano, Team USA and Club Wolverine member Klete Keller, and France's Nicolas Rostoucher. Keller qualified for the final and won the bronze medal with a time of 3:44.11.
Former Wolverine and Team USA co-captain Tom Malchow (1996-99) will defend his 2000 gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly on Monday (Aug. 16). On Tuesday (Aug. 17), junior Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) and Dan Ketchum (2001-04) will compete in the 800-meter freestyle relay for Team USA. Hurd will represent Canada in the relay.
