SALINE, Mich. -- The No. 9 University of Michigan men's soccer team improved to 4-0 with a 2-1 win over Dayton tonight (Friday, Sept. 10) at Saline High School to notch the program's best start since its inception in 2000. Junior defender Chris Glinski (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had a hand in both U-M goals, including netting the game-winner at 84:05. Glinski also assisted on Bobby Trybula's (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller HS) goal at 53:21 that tied the game at 1-1.
Dayton had the first scoring opportunity of the game, creating a one-on-one break just five minutes into the game. The Flyer attacker carried the ball into the Michigan box, but defender Ryan Sterba (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) caught him from behind and sent the ball wide of the Michigan net.
For the following 30 minutes of the game, the Wolverines carried the play and created numerous scoring chances. In the 14th minute, Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) found Jeff Mirmelstein (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) on a run inside the Dayton box. However, Dayton goalkeeper Steve Ladislaw came out to play the ball, deflecting the U-M attempt across the endline.
The Wolverines' next chance came with 28 minutes to go in the half. Turpin beat the Dayton defense down the left side of the field, forcing Ladislaw to come out and play the ball. Turpin was able to flick the ball over the keeper's head, but the shot went wide of the net and the score remained 0-0.
Dayton took control of the game with less than five minutes to play before the half. Tye Stebbins received a pass just outside the Michigan box and tried to get around the Michigan defense for a shot. The Michigan defense stood its ground, forcing Stebbins into an outside shot. Stebbins found the upper right corner of the Michigan net at 42:09 to give Dayton a 1-0 lead at the half.
The game opened up in the second half, with the teams trading possession back and forth. The Wolverines were able to net the equalizer with a goal by Trybula at 53:21. After a Dayton foul, Sterba serviced the ball into the Dayton box, finding Glinski for the header. Glinski sent the ball on to Kevin Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central HS) in the middle of the box. Hall then headed the ball forward to Trybula, who sent it to the upper right corner for the Michigan score.
Dayton had a prime opportunity to score the go-ahead goal with a one-on-one break in the 70th minute. The Dayton attacker dribbled the ball all the way into the Michigan box, but U-M goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) came out to make the save and preserve the 1-1 tie.
The Wolverines netted the game-winning goal 15 minutes later at 84:05 with Glinski's second goal of the season. Turpin beat the Dayton defense down the right side of the field and crossed the ball to Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) in the middle of the Dayton box. Blanks then flicked the ball to Glinski, who was making a run down the left side of the box. Glinski sent the ball to the lower left corner for the score. Michigan held on for the remainder of the game to secure the win.
The Wolverines will return to the field on Sunday (Sept. 12) with a match against Detroit at 5 p.m. That match will take place at the U-M Soccer Field.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "This really turned into a match of athleticism. In the first half, they did a very good job of pressuring us. We started to recognize that in the second half and did a better job of stepping out on them. We were able to win a lot more balls in the front half of the field. We did a better job of connecting on our passes, and that led to the goals. Chris Glinski had a very nice goal to win the game and we had another one off the restart. The team did a very good job of responding to their pressure and I think we are starting to figure out how to win games."
On the team's 4-0 start ... "That is a great accomplishment, but we don't want to dwell on it. It is a long season and we have to keep a level head. There is still a lot of work to do. Give the players all the credit. They come to practice ready to train and are playing very focused soccer right now."
On the play of Peter Dzubay ... "We have never had a concern about goalkeeping. Dzubay had a great game, but I have confidence that if Joe Zawacki or Ryan Bennett had been in there it would have been the same result. I think U-M is really starting to build a name for its strong goalkeeping."
U-M Junior Defender Chris Glinski
On his game-winning goal ... "I saw Trai (Blanks) get the center pass and knew I had a chance to get a good shot. I was waiting for the pass for what seemed like forever. I just remember sliding into the ball and seeing it in the back of the net."
On the team's 4-0 start ... "It shows a lot about our character and that we are a hard-working team. It may not have been a pretty win, but we'll take it. You get a lot of those in the college game and especially in the Big Ten. You have to be able to grind it out."
On how to build on the win ... "We still have a lot of things to improve. They were pressuring us a lot and we needed to play over top of them. It came down to a game of athleticism and I think we had the better athletes."
