Host Wolverines Tied for 36-Hole Lead at Lady Northern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Paced behind three Wolverines in the top 10 and five career best rounds, the University of Michigan women's golf team opened the 2004-05 season in grand fashion as the Maize and Blue sit tied atop the leaderboard of the Lady Northern Invitational at the U-M Golf Course. The Wolverines opened with a 294 setting the all-time team total low round score at their home course, only to lower it in the second round carding 291 giving them a 585 36-hole total, tying them with Missouri (298-297/585).
Senior Laura Olin (Edin Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) leads the Wolverines in the opening tournament of the season as she is tied for third with a 145 two-round total. Olin maintained a steady pace in both rounds, finishing top among all golfers in pars. She recorded one bogey and two birdies, leaving her in the red for a one-under 71 in the first round. The senior kept it up in the second round despite a double bogey on the front nine. Olin carded two bogeys and two birdies for a two-over 74 performance.
Sophomores Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) and Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary HS) are both tied for seventh with 147 36-hole totals. Broderick had a rocky start, scoring five over on the front nine of the first round before bouncing back with three birdies on the back nine to finish with a four-over 76. She went on to record a career best performance in the second round, carding a one-under 71 after five birdies throughout the round paced the career best performance. Stinson had a career day as well with back-to-back bests, putting up a one-over 73 in the first round before finishing with a two-over 74.
Junior Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) and freshman Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School) are both tied for 32nd with 154 totals. Schumucker opened with an 82, but came roaring back with a career-best 72 in the second round, while Gendreau opened with a two-over 74 and followed with an 80. Freshman Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) is tied for 65th with a 161 tally (84-77).
Other Wolverines scores and playing as individuals: junior Kelly Easton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS) tied for 43rd (81-75/156), junior/sophomore Molly Spalding (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) tied for 43rd (77-79/156), redshirt-freshman Julie Inwood (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) tied for 90th (82-89/171) and junior Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula's) is 95th (92-85/177).
Missouri's Maria Ohlsson finished the day leading all individuals with a three-under 141, carding a three-over 75 before shooting a U-M collegiate tournament record round six-under 66. Purdue's Myrtle Eikenaar is second with an even par 144 after back-to-back rounds of 72.
Michigan will complete the final round of Lady Northern Tournament play tomorrow at the U-M Golf Course. Play will tee off tomorrow in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
