The Wolverines forced five turnovers today, leading to 27 points for U-M. On the season, Michigan has scored 79 of its 117 points off of turnovers, including 21 points scored by the defense on two interception returns and one fumble return.
The Wolverine defense held Iowa to -15 yards rushing in the game. The -15 yards was just four yards shy of tying a U-M record for the fewest rushing yards allowed. Michigan held Oregon State to -19 yards on Sept. 20, 1986.
The special teams captain for today's game was senior defensive end Pat Massey.
Senior wide receiver Braylon Edwards caught a 58-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter for U-M's first touchdown of the game. The reception was his longest of the season and the 29th touchdown of Edwards' career.
With his 39-yard reception in the second quarter, Braylon Edwards passed Amani Toomer (1992-95) for second on Michigan's all-time receiving yards list. Edwards finished the game with six receptions for 150 yards and has 187 career catches for 2,711 yards. He is 366 yards shy of passing Anthony Carter (1979-82) to become U-M's all-time leader in receiving yardage.
With 132 first-half yards, Braylon Edwards recorded his third straight 100-yard receiving performance. He is second on Michigan's list of 100-yard games with 13 games over the century mark in his career.
With a 10-yard reception in the fourth quarter, Braylon Edwards set a new career high for receiving yards in a game. He finished the game with six receptions for 150 yards. His previous high for yardage in a game was 144 yards at Oregon (Sept. 23, 2003).
Senior guard Leo Henige earned his first career start today. Henige started at left guard, and fifth-year senior guard David Baas, the normal starter at left guard, made his first career start at center.
Freshman quarterback Chad Henne completed a career-long 58-yard pass to Braylon Edwards for U-M's first touchdown of the game. His previous long was a 54-yard strike to Edwards in Michigan's game against San Diego State (Sept. 18). Henne completed 16 of 26 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown.
Chad Henne rushed for his first career touchdown in the second quarter.
Freshman running back Michael Hart scored his first career touchdown with a seven-yard run in the third quarter. Hart finished the game with 26 carries for 99 yards and the score.
Michael Hart has 59 rushes for 257 yards this season.
Senior safety Ernest Shazor made his first career fumble recovery in the second quarter. The fumble was forced by senior linebacker Lawrence Reid. The fumble recovery led to Michigan's first touchdown of the game, a 58-yard pass from Chad Henne to Braylon Edwards.
Roy Manning and Ernest Shazor each had seven tackles to lead the team.
Senior linebacker Scott McClintock recorded his second career fumble recovery in the third quarter. The fumble led to a seven-yard touchdown run by Michael Hart the made the score 23-10.
Senior cornerback Grant Mason recorded both his first career interception and first career touchdown as a Wolverine in the fourth quarter to make the score 30-10.
Senior defensive end Pat Massey made one sack today to set a career best with three sacks this year.
Senior defensive tackle Alex Ofili made his second sack of the season today. He now has three sacks in his career.
Junior defensive tackle Gabe Watson recorded his first career sack in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with six total tackles, five of which were solo.
Sophomore cornerback Leon Hall made his first interception of the season in the second quarter, leading to Chad Henne's one-yard rush that made the score 16-7. Hall now has four career interceptions.
Leon Hall made his first career fumble recovery in the third quarter. The fumble was caused by fifth-year senior Roy Manning.
Sophomore linebacker LaMarr Woodley registered his second career sack and his first of the season in the second quarter.
Iowa Notes
Iowa has lost consecutive games for the first time since losing to Michigan (32-26) at home and at Wisconsin (34-28) on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, 2001. Iowa has lost its Big Ten opener for the second straight season.
Iowa scored on its first possession for the third time in four games. Iowa opened the win over Kent State with a field goal drive and the win over Iowa State with a touchdown drive. Iowa did not score on its first possession in the loss at Arizona State.
Iowa had its three longest scoring drives of the season, covering 75, 79 and 80 yards. Iowa's previous long scoring drive was a 66-yard (14-play) scoring drive vs. Kent State.
Through four games, Arizona State is the only Iowa opponent to score on the first possession. Iowa has allowed just 13 points in the first quarter in four games, 10 to Arizona State and three to Iowa State.
Ed Hinkel scored Iowa's opening touchdown with a two-yard reception, his second scoring reception of the season, and both have been on diving receptions in the end zone. The score ended a streak of six straight quarters in which Iowa's offense did not score. QB Drew Tate completed all four of his pass attempts on Iowa's first drive for 55 yards and the score.
Hinkel, a junior, ended the day with career highs in receptions (seven), yards (89) and touchdowns (two), and his 35-yard reception is a career long. His previous best was four receptions for 65 yards vs. Kent State this season.
Tate, a sophomore, had career highs in pass completions (24), attempts (32) and yards (270). He also had two TD passes vs. Kent State, both to WR Matt Melloy.
Michigan's lost fumble in the first quarter was caused by DE Matt Roth and recovered by LB Abdul Hodge. The fumble recovery was the third by Iowa's defense this season, but the first since recovering two fumbles in the opening win over Kent State. The forced fumble by Roth is the sixth forced of his career. DB Miguel Merrick forced a second Michigan fumble in the fourth quarter that DB Marcus Paschal recovered for a touchback. Iowa's 80-yard touchdown drive followed the fumble recovery by Paschal.
Ed Hinkel's fumble in the second quarter was the first lost fumble (fourth fumble overall) for Iowa in four games. The interception thrown by Drew Tate on Iowa's following possession was the fourth thrown by Tate this season, and he later threw a second interception in the fourth quarter. Iowa lost two additional fumbles in the third quarter. Iowa had just one turnover in each of its first three games.
Tate had completed all 11 of his passes prior to the interception, his longest streak of the season. He completed 10 consecutive passes during the first half of Iowa's win over Kent State to start the season.
Iowa's opponents have scored six touchdowns and one field goal following Iowa's seven turnovers, with two interceptions being returned for touchdowns. Michigan scored 27 of its 30 points following Iowa turnovers. The five turnovers by Iowa vs. Michigan are the most for the Hawkeyes in a game since they had four turnovers in a 20-10 loss at Michigan State last season.
Senior TE Tony Jackson had the best receiving game of his career. The Ypsilanti, Mich., native had four catches for 61 yards. His previous single-game best was one reception for 27 yards in a 2003 win over Penn State. Jackson had no receptions in Iowa's first three games and just seven career receptions entering the Michigan game.
Junior LB Abdul Hodge increased his career tackle total to 210. Hodge had 10 tackles in the contest, including seven solo stops. He is the 53rd Iowa player to surpass 200 career tackles, coming into the Michigan game with 200 career stops.
LB Chad Greenway reached double digits in tackles for the fourth straight game with 10 tackles, including eight solo stops. Greenway also had two QB sacks, a career high.
