ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Rivals.com, a nationally recognized college football news resource, has named University of Michigan starting quarterback Chad Henne (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson HS) national freshman of the week for his performance in the Wolverines' 30-17 win over Iowa on Saturday (Sept. 25) at Michigan Stadium. This is Henne's first award from Rivals.com.
Henne had one of his best performances in the Iowa game. He completed 16 of 26 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown. The touchdown pass was a career-long 58-yard strike to senior receiver Braylon Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS). He also rushed for his first career touchdown against the Hawkeyes, a one-yard keeper in the second quarter.
Henne became only the second Wolverine true freshman (Rick Leach, 1975) to begin the season as starting quarterback, after originally named starter Matt Gutierrez (Concord, Calif./DeLaSalle HS) suffered an injury. Henne has taken the opportunity and climbed on both Big Ten and national statistical charts. He ranks sixth in the Big Ten with a 195-yard passing average per game. He also lists 41st nationally with 16.5 completions per contest.
Henne is the first Wolverine to win a "Player of the Week" award of some type this season. Last season running back Chris Perry brought home three Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week awards, and quarterback John Navarre also won one Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, for leading the team to its comeback win victory at Minnesota. Perry (Notre Dame) and Navarre (Ohio State) both earned The Sporting News National Player of the Week awards last season.
