Wolverines Pound Jaspers, Will Play for Tourney Title

RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team set a new school record by hitting .525 as a team, led by senior Jennifer Gandolph's (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) 12 kills and .611 hitting percentage, as the Maize and Blue dispatched Manhattan College in three games (30-19, 30-18, 30-17) in the second match of Manhattan College Invitational, Saturday morning (Sept. 4) at Draddy Gymnasium.
The previous school record was .524 set against Iowa on September 27, 1991.
Sophomore Erin Cobler (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) added nine kills, while freshman Lyndsay Miller (Ida, Mich./Ida) had seven kills and set a personal best with six blocks in the victory. Sophomores Danielle Pflum (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) and Megan Bowman (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) each added eight kills.
Senior Lisa Gamalski (Milwaukee, Wisc./Catholic Memorial) was credited with 32 assists in the record-setting match, while senior Sarah Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) led the team with nine digs.
U-M is 2-0 at the Manhattan College Invitational and will contend for the tournament crown against American University at 4:00 p.m. today.

• American University defeated Manhattan College, 3-0 in Friday's match. The Eagles were the unanimous pick to win the Patriot League title in the conference's preseason poll after posting a 22-10 record in 2003 and a perfect 14-0 conference mark. AU advanced to the NCAA Tournmanet where it fell to Maryland in the opening round.Â
• Michigan posted an 8-3 record in preseason tournaments in 2003, taking three of four tourney crowns. Previously, only the 1987 squad had captured three preseason tournaments. In 2003, U-M took the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge, the Michigan/Nike Challenge and the Toyota Lady Vol Classic.
• Michigan is 3-0 to start the 2004 season. The Wolverines began the 2003 season 1-2.
• Michigan best hitting performance in 2003 was a .476 performance against Iowa on November 21.
• Head coach Mark Rosen needs just three more victories to post 300 career wins.
• Jennifer Gandolph recorded her 200th career block against Manhattan. She now has 203 blocks.
• Danielle Pflum recorded her 100th career kill against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday. She now has 111 kills.
