Michigan Suffers Road Setback at Fifth-Ranked Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 9 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 135-102 to No. 5 Stanford today (Friday, Jan. 7) at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center.
Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) led the way for the Wolverines with a pair of victories in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) and Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) each contributed one individual victory with wins in the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.
The Wolverines got off to a slow start with Stanford claiming the first two events of the evening, including the top three spots in the 400-yard medley relay. Peter Vanderkaay gave Michigan its first win of the night with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in an NCAA automatic time of 1:36.15 to beat the field by nearly one second.
Following the 200-yard freestyle, Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) finished third in the 50-yard freestyle with a personal-best time of 20.85 and DeJong claimed second in the 200-yard individual medley with an NCAA consideration time of 1:48.57.
After a Stanford victory in the one-meter springboard diving, Tarwater was narrowly edged in the 200-yard butterfly. Tarwater trailed by nearly two seconds after the first 100 yards of the race but charged over the last 50 yards to finish second by just 0.14 seconds.
Peter Vanderkaay and DeJong got the Wolverines back in the win column with back-to-back victories in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke, respectively. Vanderkaay touched the wall in 44.35 to earn an NCAA consideration time and his second victory of the meet. DeJong beat the field by nearly one second with a time of 1:44.23.
Following Stanford victories in the 500-yard freestyle and the three-meter springboard, Christian Vanderkaay notched Michigan's final individual victory of the meet with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:04.44.
The Wolverines also claimed the top two places in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Johnny Austermann (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley HS), Brendan Neligan (Briarwood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS), Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) and Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park) claimed the top time of 2:59.08. Michigan's 'B' squad of DeJong, Tarwater, Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Trafalger) and Peter Vanderkaay finished second in 3:14.75.
The Wolverines (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) will return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 8) when they face No. 8 California in dual-meet action. The meet is scheduled for 1 p.m. PST in Berkeley, Calif.
