2005 FBL vs. Penn State -- Postgame Notes

Today's announced attendance against Penn State was 111,249. The Wolverines have drawn in excess of 100,000 fans for 191 consecutive games.
All 11 games played between Michigan and Penn State have been televised on ABC, with Michigan holding an 8-3 record in those games. The Wolverines are 4-1 in games with a 3:30 p.m. start time.
U-M holds a 23-5 record in games following a loss under coach Lloyd Carr. This season the Wolverines are 3-0 following a setback.
The Wolverines held Penn State without a point through the first half, marking the second time U-M accomplished the feat against an opponent this season. U-M also shut out Eastern Michigan in a 55-0 victory (Sept. 17). The last time U-M held a Big Ten opponent to zero points in the first half was Oct. 25, 2003, in a 35-3 rout vs. Purdue.
All four of Michigan's Big Ten Conference games have been decided in the last minute or overtime.
The Wolverines converted their first two-point conversion of the season on a three-yard run by tailback Mike Hart.
Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr improved to 37-20 against ranked opponents and 15-5 against teams ranked in the top 10.
Sophomore quarterback Chad Henne was 21-for-36 for 212 yard and two touchdowns, including the game-winning toss on the final play of the game. Henne has thrown a touchdown pass in 18 of 19 career games. He had his Michigan school-record streak of 17 straight games with a touchdown pass snapped last week against Minnesota (Oct. 8). With his two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, Henne tied and surpassed Todd Collins (1991-94) for fifth place in career touchdown passes with 38.
Freshman wide receiver Mario Manningahm finished with three catches for 49 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning catch on the final play of the game. His five touchdowns this season are the second most ever by a U-M freshman wide receiver behind Anthony Carter's (1979-82) seven.
Sophomore tailback Mike Hart, who rushed 23 times for 108 yards and scored eight points on a touchdown and a two-point conversion, recorded his fourth 100-yard or better rushing game of the season. He pushed his season totals to 117 carries for 556 yards. His touchdown was Michigan's first third-quarter offensive touchdown of the 2005 season. He also reached 2,000 career rushing yards with his one-yard run in the fourth quarter. In addition, Hart extended his streak of offensive touches without a fumble to 380 following 27 touches without a fumble in today's game.
Freshman Antonio Bass recorded a career-long 23-yard run in the second quarter on a quarterback draw.
Senior punter Ross Ryan registered a career-long 64-yard punt inside the Penn State five-yard line in the second quarter. His previous career-best was a 56-yarder against Notre Dame (Sept. 10). It was his fourth career punt over 50 yards and the 10th inside the 20-yard line.
Junior placekicker Garrett Rivas moved to third on Michigan's career field goals scored list with two field goals, surpassing J.D. Carlson (1989-91) for third place with 40. Rivas also gained his 50th point of the season on the first field goal, and he tied a career long with his 47-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Freshman cornerback Brandon Harrison earned his first career fumble recovery in the second quarter. Senior linebacker Dave Harris forced the play. It was Penn State's first fumble in three games.
With eight passes caught for 75 yards today against Penn State, senior receiver Jason Avant padded his career reception total to 140, with 53 coming this season, and moved to seventh on Michigan's all-time receptions list. He has surpassed his career-high season total in receptions from 2003 (47). Avant has recorded a catch in 30 straight games played, tying Mercury Hayes (1992-95) for the most consecutive games with a reception in Michigan history.
Fifth-year senior cornerback Grant Mason and senior linebacker Dave Harris shared the team lead in tackles with 10 in the win against Penn State as each surpassed the 50-tackle mark on the season.
Junior linebacker LaMarr Woodley has tallied at least one tackle for loss in every game this season. Against Penn State, he registered four tackles for loss totaling 12 yards, including an eight-yard sack. His four tackles for loss tie his career high, which he accomplished against Texas in the 2005 Rose Bowl.
With his 39-yard kick return in the third quarter, Steve Breaston surpassed Desmond Howard (1989-91) to move into second place all-time in kick return yards with 1,288.
Junior cornerback Leon Hall equaled his interception total from 2004 (2) with his interception in the fourth quarter. He picked off a career-best three in 2003 as a freshman.
Penn State Notes
The crowd of 111,249 is the second largest crowd ever to witness a Penn State game.
Quarterback Michael Robinson's second-quarter fumble was Penn State's first turnover in 11 quarters.
Penn State was held scoreless in the first half for the first time this season.
Big Ten sack leader Tamba Hali added to his season total with a sack on Michigan's final drive of the first half.
Wide receiver Derrick Williams made a career-high six catches on the day for 59 yards.
Wide receiver Terrell Golden's 56-yard third-quarter reception was a career long.
Michael Robinson's fourth-quarter touchdown run was his sixth rushing touchdown of the year. He has a rushing touchdown in six of Penn State's seven games on the season.
Cornerback Alan Zemaitis' 35-yard fumble return for a touchdown was his second return of a fumble for a touchdown this season and the third of his career.
Placekicker Kevin Kelly's two-point conversion on a fumbled hold was Penn State's first two-point conversion of the season and first since converting a two-point attempt at Indiana last season.
