Schmucker Leads U-M to 11th in Arkansas Tournament

ROGERS, Ark. -- Senior Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) posted a final round even-par 72 to vault herself into the top 20 and help the University of Michigan women's golf team move up a spot to finish 11th today (Tuesday, Oct. 18) at the 2005 Tyson/Embassy Suites Invitational at the Pinnacle Country Club.
The Maize and Blue opened the three-day tournament tallying a 315 team total in Sunday's first round and followed with a 310 in Monday's second round to put themselves in a tie for 12th place with a 625 total. With Schmucker's even-par 72 today, the Wolverines posted a 316 final round tally, but managed to move up a spot to finish 11th with a 941 54-hole total.
Schmucker, who was the top finishing Wolverine for the fourth straight tournament, tied for 16th with a 227 total. After opening with a 78 in Sunday's first round, she rallied slightly in Monday' second round posting a 77. With low scores needed to help the Maize and Blue in the final round, Schmucker responded. Starting on the back-nine, she bogeyed No. 10 and No. 14 to sit two-over after four holes. Back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and 18, helped her make the turn even. She stayed there as she played even golf through the front nine as she posted an even-par 72 in the final round helping her earn her fourth straight top 20 finish.
Junior Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) tied for 46th with a 236 total. After struggling in the opening round, posting an 80, she rebounding with a 77 in the second round, as four birdies throughout the round helped her round. She closed with a 79 to give her a 236 total.
Other Wolverine scores included: junior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), tied for 54th with a 238 total (78-75-85), senior Kelly Easton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS), tied for 59th with a 240 total (79-81-80) and sophomore Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was DQ'd for failing to sign her scorecard after turning it in. She had recorded back-to-back rounds of 81 before she was disqualified. Senior Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) traveled as an individual and tied for 78th with a 249 total (80-87-82).
With three players among the top five, host Arkansas (291-299-286) win its own tournament by 20 strokes with an 876 54-hole total. Notre Dame (299-303-294) was the runner-up at 896 and Kentucky (311-291-3041) was third at 906. The Razorbacks' Ashley Medders, who was playing as an individual, took medalist honors with a four-under 212 54-hole total (72-71-69). Teammates Stacy Lewis (72-73-70) and Courtney Mahon (71-71-73), both starters, tied for the runner-up spot with one-under 215 tallies.
The Wolverines will close out their fall season with a trip to Wilmington, N.C., Friday through Sunday (Oct. 28-30) for the 2005 Landfall Tradition. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Jack Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall.

N O T E S
With her tie for 16th place finish, Amy Schmucker has finished as the top Wolverine in all four fall events for the Wolverines. Prior to her senior season, she had only led the Maize and Blue in three total events, one in each of her first three years.
Amy Schmucker has now finished each of the fall tournaments among the top 20. She was the medalist runner-up at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 1-2), tied for seventh at the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 24-25), 11th at the Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18) and tied for 16th at the Tyson/Embassy Suites Invitational (Oct. 16-18).
By playing in the 2005 Tyson/Embassy Suites Invitational, Amy Schmucker has played in 40 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue, while Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson have played in 28 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue. Last season, former Wolverine Laura Olin set the U-M record playing in 50 consecutive tournaments.
