ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team tied for first place with Grand Valley State in the four-kilometer race at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships Friday (Oct. 7) on Katke-Cousins Golf Course. Giving most of its top runners the week off, U-M scored 23 points (2-4-6-11) and bettered its runner-up finish of a year ago.
The conditions were ideal and very familiar for the U-M harriers, as it was chilly and breezy at around 50 degrees. The Wolverines were led by senior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele), who finished second with a time of 13:58.2 in her second event of the season.
U-M placed two more runners in the top 10, as sophomore/freshman Claire Otwell (Traverse City, Mich./Central) came in fourth place with a time of 14:09.9, while junior/sophomore Kalli Williams (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) placed sixth (14:18.6).
Wolverine runners that placed in the top 20 were senior Chelsea Homan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) with an 11th-place finish with a time of 14:37.1 and sophomore/freshman Lisa Montgomery (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) in 18th place (14:48.6).

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Mike McGuire
On his thoughts on the race ... "We gave some people the opportunity to be scorers and put them in different positions than they normally are in in a meet with us. They took on different rolls and did a great job with that. In particular the Montgomery twins, Natasha (Luppov), Chelsea Homan, to get them the opportunity to race because they've been working really hard in practice. I thought everyone showed improvement, all seven of them showed improvement over the last time they were out racing, and that's what we're striving to do with everybody on the team as the season progresses. In that regard I thought they got the job done."
On the importance of the depth of the roster for the latter part of the season ... "Well, we're only as strong as the quality of the depth of our team, and in that regard we're continuing to make progress, so it might be a situation where someone is called upon to assume a roll at a higher level. They're preparing and training to do it and getting the opportunity to race and so we feel they'll be ready to go at any given moment."
On his thoughts on the NCAA Pre-Nationals ... "Well, Pre-Nats, that's going to be our biggest meet to date, so it's going to give us an opportunity to compete against some teams we haven't seen this year and to see if we're on par with what our national ranking is. So we'll have a clearer idea on where we stand on a national level, at least relative to the middle of October, next week than we do this week."
