Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Burnett
Opening statement ... "We knew we could succeed if we could ever start executing. Since we had 19 turnovers in the first half, it was a challenge. We made some very small adjustments and I thought our players really reacted extremely well and fought. We're a program that will play really, really hard, but we also want thinkers. Our players took out of halftime the small adjustments that we wanted to make. It does start with effort for us, and I continue to talk about Kelly Helvey and just the hustle plays that she gives us. We want to be a program where our defense is always creating things for us. I believe our effort in the second half was the difference in the game. I give Miami an incredible amount of credit. They played hard, they played smart. They had two kids go down. You don't like to see that at all, and one of their best players wasn't even playing. It was a tremendous effort by them and a learning situation for us. Ta'Shia Walker continues to be a go-to player for us. We really felt some exciting moments in the second half, not in the first."
On the adjustments made in the second half ... "We play against pressure man every day. We have the greatest group of practice guys that you could ever imagine in your life, and we do a really great job of breaking pressure down. Miami did a great job of getting out in some passing lanes. We have a lot of turnovers that are just 'I'm zigging while you're zagging.' Youth a lot of time causes that. We wish it wasn't nearly like it was in the first half. Those are things that we will fix with execution, and we did a better job of executing those things in the second half. Our veterans did an incredible job, and our veterans are just sophomores and one junior. They did a great job of coming in and executing things in the second half and gave us some confidence."
U-M Junior Kelly Helvey
On Michigan's turnovers in the first half ..."That was the biggest thing. I turned the ball over starting off on my first pass. We calmed down. We had big-time jitters. We have to play together. People weren't where they were supposed to be and that led to turnovers."
On the difference in the second half ..."We focused on stopping their penetration and boxing out. Just everyone working together and chemistry coming together in the second half."
