ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's gymnastics head coach Kurt Golder announced today (Wednesday, Nov. 30) the signing of Torrance Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS), Joseph Levine (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia HS) and Nicholas Noone (Danbury,Conn./Danbury HS) to National Letters of Intent for the 2006-07 academic year.
"I'm very happy about this year's recruiting class. All three are very strong students, and they'll step in and have a major impact on the team right away as freshmen," Golder said.
Laury, the younger brother of current Wolverine senior Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS), trains at the Atlanta School of Gymnastics. He recently placed ninth all-around and second on parallel bars at the 2005 Junior National Championships (May 4-7). At the 2005 USA Championships (junior division) in August he placed 17th all-around. "Torrance is a very strong all-around gymnast now and has great potential to develop into a contender on all six events," Golder commented.
Levine, the younger brother of former Michigan gymnast and assistant coach Lou Levine, trains at Sergent's Elite Gymnastics. At the 2005 Junior National Championships his best finishes came on the pommel horse and parallel bars with scores of 8.20 and 8.85, respectively. "Joe is a solid gymnast and has a great line on pommel horse," Golder said. "We're really looking to him to help us significantly on that event."
Noone, who trains at American Gymnastics, placed 11th on still rings, second on parallel bars, and 10th in the all-around at the 2005 Junior National Championships. He notched top-10 finishes on rings (ninth), vault (10th), and high bar (eighth), and placed 13th in the all-around at the 2005 USA Championships (junior division). "Nick is extremely good on the parallel bars, which is a weak area for our team," Golder remarked. "He also has great potential on rings, and we're counting on him to develop as an all-arounder."
Michigan's annual Maize and Blue intrasquad competition will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena. The team opens its regular season in Chicago at the Windy City Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14.
