SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The. No. 3-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team came away with a wild 8-5 road victory over Notre Dame on Friday (Nov. 4). Michigan led 4-2 heading into the third period and 5-3 midway through the final frame. Then U-M and ND combined for five goals in the final 7:29 as the Irish drew as close as 6-5. Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) scored the final two goals of the game to close out the win.
Eighteen seconds into the contest Notre Dame struck first by sneaking the puck inside the left post for a 1-0 lead. Matt Amado jammed the puck into Noah Ruden's (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) pad from behind the net, and after Ruden seemed to cover the puck it ended up trickling over the goal line for a 1-0 ND lead.
The Wolverines were prevented from answering back after Matt Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) was given a double minor penalty at 2:53 for contact to the head roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct. Michigan's penalty killers successfully denied the ND power play to keep a 1-0 game.
Michigan's first chance with the man advantage occurred at 8:11. Travis Turnbull (Chesterfield, Mo.) knotted the game at 1-1 with 10:10 to play in the period. Brandon Kaleniecki (Livonia, Mich.) was just below the goal line on the right side and made a one-touch, cross-crease pass for Turnbull to bang past goalie David Brown. Andrew Ebbett (Vernon, B.C.) also drew an assist on the play.
U-M was whistled for back-to-back penalties with 5:03 and 4:00 remaining in the opening stanza. After stopping the five-on-three chance, the Wolverines were aided by ND taking a penalty with 15 seconds left in its second power play.
Back on its own man-advantage, Michigan cashed in for the second time of evening as Chad Kolarik (Abington, Pa.) blasted a shot blocker-side past Brown with 47 seconds left in the period. Kolarik's first goal of the season came courtesy of assists by Jack Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Hunwick. Michigan held a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes despite being outshot 12-9.
At 5:55 of the second period Jason Bailey (Nepean, Ontario) scored his first career goal on a rebound. Kevin Porter (Northville, Mich.) rang a shot off the left post that hit the goalie and sat in the crease. Bailey came around from behind the net and tapped it in for a 3-1 advantage.
On the power play again, Michigan scored at 11:22. Ebbett took slap shot from just inside the right circle and Brandon Naurato (Livonia, Mich.) tipped it down through the goaltender to garner his first career goal.
Notre Dame ended Michigan's four-goal run at 16:32 of the second stanza thanks to a two-man advantage. Brown made a long pass up the ice to Mark Van Guilder at the U-M blue line. Tim Wallace went to the slot to receive a pass in alone and deked Ruden for the score.
The Wolverines were assessed another minor penalty only 35 seconds later to give the Fighting Irish their fifth power play of the stanza. Michigan killed the opportunity, however, to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
To start the third period, Michigan scored its fourth power-play marker of the game. At 2:47, Porter one-timed a shot from T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) into the Notre Dame goal.
Notre Dame narrowed the gap to 5-3 at 7:16 of the final period on a goal by Mike Walsh. A few seconds inside the 12-minute mark, Ruden made consecutive right-pad saves on an initial shot and then the ensuing rebound to hold the 5-3 lead.
Halfway through the period the Wolverines were called for back-to-back penalties, giving ND a two-man advantage for the third time of the contest. Ruden made a key glove save on Erik Condra with nine minutes remaining to aid the penalty-killing effort.
Just as the final Michigan penalty had expired Cogliano and Hensick broke into the ND zone with a two-on-one. Hensick broke to the right post and knocked in the feed from Cogliano at 12:31 to make it 6-3.
The Fighting Irish got right back into the game with two goals in 23 seconds. The first came by Garrett Regan at 15:13. Then Condra scored on a breakaway at 15:36 to make it 6-5.
Michigan responded with a goal by Cogliano at 16:33 when he snapped a shot over Brown's shoulder into the far corner of the net. Cogliano added his second goal on an empty-netter with 55 seconds left in the game.
The Wolverines and Fighting Irish will match up again tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 5) at Yost Ice Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:35 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live by Comcast Local.
