COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team closed out its regular season with a 1-0 loss against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday (Nov. 4) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Wolverines finish the Big Ten season 2-4-0, with an overall record of 8-9-1.
The first scoring chance for the Wolverines came 13 minutes in, when senior Ryan Alexander (Southfield, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) shredded the defense, slipping the ball to senior Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), giving Ray Burse Jr. his first save of the night. The second scoring opportunity for U-M came with 10:30 left in the half after freshman Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) set up Alexander for a one-on-two opportunity, only to come up with a blocked shot.
The first half of play ended with a score of 0-0, as the Wolverines played a ball-controlling game in the last minutes of action, taking the shot advantage, 6-4. Michigan senior Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) finished the first half with two of his eight saves.
U-M came out of the intermission trying to add on more offensive pressure, but the Buckeyes were able to find their way past the Michigan defense to score the first goal of the game at the 56:55 mark. The play was set up by Xavier Balc as he passed it to Kevin Nugent. Dzubay then came out of the net to cut off Nugent's angle, allowing the OSU forward to beat Dzubay to the right.
The Wolverines responded by increasing their offensive pressure and forced a direct free kick just minutes after the goal. Senior Ryan Sterba's (Westlake, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) shot went inches wide left.
The lone goal for OSU proved to be fatal for the Wolverines, as they were unable to find an answer for the goal.
The Wolverines will travel to Evanston, Ill., to play in the Big Ten Championship, scheduled for Thursday through Sunday (Nov. 10-13).
