Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the play of the special teams tonight ... "The power play and penalty killing continued to be a factor in our games, and they are a factor in all games. If you look around our league, or the world of hockey, particularly college hockey, power plays and penalty killing -- special teams -- are huge. Some cases, teams are winning the battle just because of shorthanded goals. Right now, our power play has a lot of confidence and momentum and a lot of depth. It is good to see Chad Kolarik score; he has not scored up until this weekend, and he has had three this weekend. It is good to see (Andrew) Cogliano off to such a good start; he is dangerous on the power play. T.J. (Hensick) and (Kevin) Porter are more experienced and so on, so I think we are getting a real semblance of a real good power play. That can sputter from time to time, but right now that is a big part of our game. Obviously, we will have to improve on our five-on-five and other parts of the game."
On adjusting after last weekend's trip to Alaska ... "Our team knows that we did not play well in parts of the game. I think that Alaska trip is a trip to deal with the next weekend. When you think of the toll it takes, we got back on Sunday night, with a four-hour time change, and trying to get school and hockey together and to play six periods of consistent hockey, that is a real challenge."
On Notre Dame ... "I think they are a much improved team. They are hard working, they played a good system. They are hard to play against and they had their chances to win this weekend. Even though they were behind most of the time, outside of tonight when they got ahead, but they played hard and they are going to be a team down the stretch. I think they are a good team and it is a good win for us."
On only giving up two goals tonight ... "We have a lot of work to do, and I am sure other teams do too. Our goals against was much better and it gives us a chance to win a close game. We knew it would be a closer game."
U-M Junior Forward T.J. Hensick
On adjusting after last weekends trip to Alaska ... "That is a tough trip. It was a good bonding experience for our team in that aspect, but that is a long trip. You are changing flights three or four times and then you have to get back and get your school stuff done. To get back on the ice after the time change is tough. It is good to get two wins coming off that Alaska trip, which is something we wanted. We did not want a letdown and I guess we did not."
On the team's strength on the penalty kill ... "We were prepared going into other games, where we know the other team's power play really well. We have to attribute that to hard work too. We have guys out there blocking shots because they want to; they have that passion to do it. It comes down to hard work, outworking the other team's power play. A lot has to do with preparation and a lot has to do with hard work and desire."
U-M Sophomore Forward Chad Kolarik
On special teams ... "That is definitely of interest to our team. We got dominated in five-on-five play all weekend. You have to hand it to them, but at the same time, we have to come to play. If it was not for special teams, we would have lost both games. We definitely have to take that into account."
On his success of the power play ... "Luck. I got lucky on all three of my goals this weekend. T.J., (Matt) Hunwick, (Jack) Johnson, Cogs, Andrew Ebbett, (Brandon) Kaleniecki, and all the other guys -- pretty much you can put all 23 of our guys out there on the power play and we can all do something. You cannot attribute that to any one player."
On finally scoring his first goal of the season last night"After I scored my goal last night, I made a little joke about getting the monkey off my back. I was pressing way too hard, I was thinking about it all the time. It is definitely a big lift to get those first three goals."
U-M Freshman Forward Andrew Cogliano
On his slow start ... "The first three games were a little tough for me this year. I think it was just getting adjusted to the game. After I got some luck going, goals and points started rolling in. It just builds confidence. I am doing well right now, playing hard, getting my chances."
