AUSTIN, Texas -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team featured seven top-eight finishes tonight (Thursday, Dec. 1) to help propel the team to fourth place, with 155 points, on the first day of competition at the Texas Invitational. Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) posted U-M's top finish of the night, placing a close second in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA automatic qualifying time.
The team of senior captains Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) along with freshman Bryan Vessels (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) started the meet with an NCAA 'B' time of 1:20.47 for a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Tarwater repeated the fourth-place performance with another in the 100-yard butterfly with his first NCAA automatic qualifying time (47.04) of the season.
The 500-yard freestyle was the Wolverines' strongest event of the night as they featured three swimmers in the A final. Flipping places from last year's meet, Peter Vanderkaay was edged by Southern Cal's Ous Mellouli by 0.17 seconds, 4:12.18 to 4:12.35, both NCAA 'A' standard times. Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) and DeJong rounded out Michigan's A final trio, placing sixth and seventh, respectively. Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) and Christian Sprang (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) joined Patton and DeJong as they all earned NCAA 'B' standard times.
Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) continued U-M's top finishes in the 200-yard individual medley. The sophomore placed sixth after touching in 1:50.30, more than three seconds faster than his previous season best.
Jon Donadee (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) was Michigan's top point-getter in the three-meter diving finals. Scoring 261.50, the junior was less than three points away from making the finals as he earned a ninth-place finish.
In the second relay and final event of the night, the captains were joined this time by Andrew Albright (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) for the 400-yard medley relay. The quartet posted an NCAA consideration time of 4:15.01, good for third place.
Action continues through Saturday (Dec. 3), with prelims at 10 a.m. CST and finals starting at 6 p.m. each day.
