PARRISH, Fla. -- With the help of a career-best two-under 70 by junior Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Roceri HS) and a one-under 70 by freshman Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School), the 23rd-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team recorded a team tournament best one-over 289 in the third round Tuesday (Feb. 22) to help the Wolverines to an 899 54-hole tournament total and a fifth place showing at the prestigious Central District Classic held at the River Wilderness Country Club. The Maize and Blue recorded team totals of 307 and 303 during Monday's first day of play.
Complimenting the strong play by the Wolverines, Schmucker took home her first collegiate medalist honor after a career-best two-day performance. She finished with a career-best 216 (74-72-70) 54-hole total lowering her best 54-hole tournament score by 10 strokes. Her 216 total would tie her with Arkansas' Stacy Lewis (72-70-74), but Schmucker was declared the winner based upon her low final round score, 70 to 74.
After opening the tournament three-over through her first three holes, Schmucker collected herself and brought herself back with three birdies through the rest of the round to finish her first round with a two-over 74. She opened her second round playing one-over golf through her first eight holes as she continued to build her confidence recovering from miscues with two more birdies. She found her groove as she finished out the round playing one-under through the next 10 holes to finish with an even-par 72.
In the final round, she opened with an eagle on her first hole to start the day two in the red. She collected another birdie five holes later to go three-under. She slipped a little with two bogey's on her 11th and 14th holes of the day, but got one stoke back on her final hole as she drained a four-foot putt to close out the tournament with a career-best two-under 70 and her first collegiate tournament title.
Gendreau used her final round one-under 71 to help her jump 15 spots and finished tied for 26th with a 227 total. She opened with a 77 and followed that with a 79 to sit in a tie for 41st after the first day. Senior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) also tied for 26th with a 227 total. After opening with a disappointing 80 in the first round, she rallied to card rounds of two-over 74 and one-over 73 to help move her into the top 30.
Other Wolverine finishes include: sophomore Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), tied for 41st with a 232 total (79-78-75) and sophomore Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary), tied for 46th with a 234 total (77-81-76).
Missouri (292-295-292) led from start to finish to claim the Central District Classic title with a 879 total. Arkansas (296-293-292) made a late third round run at the Tigers, but the Razorbacks would finish two strokes off the pace with an 881. Baylor (300-295-297) was third with a 892 total.
With the first spring tournament under wraps, the Wolverines will head out on their spring break training trip before landing in Rio Verde, Ariz., for the 2005 East/West Rio Verde Invitational at the White Wing Golf Course at the Rio Verde Country Club. The 54-hole tournament will be Thursday through Saturday (March 3-5) with 18 holes being played each day.
