MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The fifth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team utilized wins in the 400-yard individual medley and the 800-yard freestyle relay Friday (Feb. 25) to move up into fourth place with 282 team points at the Big Ten Conference Championships at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center. Minnesota sits atop the standings with 469 points.
Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) won his second individual event of the Championships, claiming the title in the 400-yard individual medley. It marked Vanderkaay's second straight title in the event and the eighth straight time a Wolverine has claimed the crown.
In the day's final event, the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of Vanderkaay, Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School), Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) and Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ont./Trafalger) led the entire race, tying a Big Ten meet record with a time of 6:21.77. The Wolverines matched their own record from the 2002 Championships and won their fifth straight title in the event.
After the team of DeJong, Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS), Tarwater and Peter Vanderkaay set a school record with a time of 1:27.69, good for third in the 200-yard medley relay, Vanderkaay posted a career-best time of 3:44.55 in winning the 400-yard individual medley. He was followed to the wall by Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park) in sixth at 3:51.39 and Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) in eighth at 3:57.84, helping the Wolverines to 44 total points in the event.
The Wolverines bolstered their team points with a number of top-eight finishes in the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard backstroke. Tarwater took second in the 100-yard butterfly with a Michigan record and NCAA automatic time of 46.68. Tarwater was in sixth after the first 25 yards of the race but charged over the final 50 yards to finish just two tenths behing Northwestern's Kyle Bubolz.
Also posting top-eight finishes were Hurd with a sixth-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle, Christian Vanderkaay taking seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke and DeJong finishing fourth in the 100-yard backstroke.
