JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Former University of Michigan quarterback Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to their third Super Bowl title in four seasons as they claimed the Vince Lombardi Trophy with a 24-21 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday (Feb. 6) in Super Bowl XXXIX at Alltel Stadium.
Brady completed 22-of-33 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns. He engineered three touchdown drives and one series that led to a 22-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri. Brady completed a four-yard touchdown pass to David Givens in the second quarter and added a two-yard TD pass to Mike Vrabel on the opening series of the third quarter.
Cornerback Ty Law, on injured reserve after breaking his leg at Pittsburgh (Oct. 30), won his third Super Bowl ring in four trips to the Super Bowl with the Patriots.
Brady and Law tied tight end Jim Mandich, a member of the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers, for the most Super Bowl titles among former Michigan players, with three rings apiece. Law and Mandich have participated in a school-record four Super Bowl games.
On the opposing sideline with the Eagles were right tackle Jon Runyan and outside linebacker Dhani Jones. Jones collected two tackles in the contest.
