Michigan Opens Doubleheader Day with Sweep of Butler

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 43 University of Michigan men's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak with a resounding 7-0 sweep over Butler Saturday (March 12) at the Varsity Tennis Center. In the first match of a doubleheader, the Wolverines (8-4, 2-0 Big Ten) displayed a dominating peformance by winning all but one set en route to victories in each of the nine matches contested.
Senior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) and sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) got things started with a win at No. 2 doubles, taking four of the final five games in an 8-4 victory over James Low and Parker Ross. Seniors David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) and Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) clinched the doubles point at No. 3, claiming the first four games en route to an 8-4 win over Tony Aker and Evan West.
Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) completed the doubles sweep at No. 1, as they went game for game with Andy Bartish and Eric Breitenbach before coming out on top by an 8-6 score.
Fischer gave Michigan a 2-0 lead in the match after a victory over Mike Weaver at No. 6 singles. Trailing 2-1 at the start of the match, Fischer won five straight games to take the first set (6-2), then cruised to a 6-1 win in the second frame to seal the victory.
Is his career debut at the No.1 singles position, Maravic blew away Low 6-0, 6-3 to bring the Wolverines within one match of claiming the team victory. Anving provided the clincher at No. 5, as he earned a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Breitenbach for his 10th win of 2004-05.
Hung stayed perfect at the No. 3 position (4-0), moving past Ross 6-4, 6-2, while sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) outlasted West in a thriller at No. 4, 7-6(11), 6-3.
In the final match remaining on the courts, senior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) defeated Bartish in a super-tiebreaker at No. 2. Rubin, who took the first set 6-3, was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second frame. Bartish broke serve and eventually won the set in a tiebreaker 7-6(2), but Rubin won eight of the first nine points en route to a 10-6 triumph in the super-tiebreaker set.
The Wolverines return to the Varsity Tennis Center later this evening (6 p.m.) to wrap up their doubleheader against Indiana State.
