LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- With a final round one-under 71 from senior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS), the 25th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team maintained its top five showing today (March 16) as the Maize and Blue tied for fourth, along with Tennessee, with a 926 54-hole total at 2005 UNLV Spring Invitational at the Black Mountain Golf and Country Club.
With wind gusts upwards in the 30-40 mph, scoring in Monday's first round was not easy to come by as the Wolverines tallied a 316. As the weather conditions lessening and became optimum on the second day, so did the scoring as the Maize and Blue dropped eight strokes with a 308 second round tally. The third round proved to be even more favorable as the Wolverines used Olin's final round to help drop six more strokes as U-M tallied a 302 to give them a 926 total. The Lady Vols had team rounds of 318, 306 and 302 for their 926 tournament total.
Olin finished as the top Wolverine for the second straight tournament with a tie for fifth showing after a 225 54-hole total. She jumped seven spots after her final round tally giving her her fifth top five finish of the season.
Olin recovered nicely from an opening round of 81 in Monday's windy conditions with a one-over 73, which included four birdies, in Tuesday's second round and a one-under 71, which included four more birdies, in the final round. Olin nearly closed out with a sub-70 round as she was three-under par approaching the final tee. In her final tee shot of the day, she smashed a five-wood right down the middle of the fairway, but it took a wicked kick to the right and rolled into a fairway bunker, causing her to have to chip out and double-bogey her final hole to give her the one-under total.
Junior Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) continued her solid spring season as she was 27th with a 234 total. She opened with a four-over 76 and followed with back-to-back seven-over 79s. Sophomore Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) was right behind Schmucker as she tied for 28th at 235. After an 80 in the first round and a 79 in the second round, Broderick closed out with a four-over 76 in the final round to help her crack the top 30.
Other Wolverine finishes included: sophomore Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary), tied for 37th with a 239 (79-82-78); freshman Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School), tied for 43rd with a 241 total (87-77-77) and freshman Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), who was playing as an individual tied for 53rd with a 243 total (85-82-76).
No. 23 Southern Cal led from start to finish and claimed the team title with an 895 54-hole total (306-299-290). No. 5 Pepperdine (317-302-291) was the runner-up with a 910 total, while No. 19 Arizona (312-298-306) was third at 916. As for the individuals, Arizona's Cassandra Kirkland (75-69-76) claimed medalist honors after she tallied a four-over 220 total. Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas (74-75-72) was the runner-up at 221, while Southern Cal's Catalina Marin (73-73-76) was third at 222.
After a weekend off, the Wolverines will head back down south for their third tournament in March at the 2005 Baylor Tapatio Springs Shootout, Thursday through Saturday (March 24-26), in Boerne, Texas. The 54-hole, three day tournament will be played at the Tapatio Springs Resort.
