Smith, Mueller to Compete at World Championship Trials

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- University of Michigan women's swimmers Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) and Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) will compete at USA Swimming's 2005 World Championship Trials, scheduled for Friday through Wednesday, April 1-6, at IUPUI's University Natatorium. Smith will race in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events. Mueller will compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and 200 and 400 individual medley races. All events will be swam in long-course meters.
Preliminary heats will begin at 9 a.m. each day, with finals sessions scheduled for 6 p.m. Smith and Mueller hope to qualify for this summer's World Championships, which will be held July 17-31 in Montreal, Canada.
Smith, a sophomore, was Michigan's top performer at last weekend's NCAA Championships (March 11-13), swimming on the Wolverines' fifth-place 200-yard (1:30.55) and seventh-place 400-yard (3:18.83) freestyle relay teams, and earning U-M's lone individual All-America award with an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard freestlyle (1:48.01). Prior to the national meet, Smith collected Big Ten championships in the 100-yard (48.80) and 200-yard (1:45.26) freestyle events, and helped U-M win conference titles in all three freestyle relay races. Smith's winning time in the 100-yard freestyle set a Big Ten meet record, while her top time in 200-yard freestyle is a school record.
Mueller, a freshman, had an impressive performance in her first career NCAA meet, earning All-America honorable mention accolades after finshing ninth in both the 200-yard (1:59.07) and 400-yard (4:12.09) individual medley events. Mueller was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships and Freshman of the Year after claiming three individual conference titles, in the 200-yard IM (1:57.78), 400-yard IM (4:12.37) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.81), and helping U-M to first place in a pair of freestyle relay races.
