Porter Nabs Regional Qualifying Time in Outdoor Debut

RALEIGH, N.C -- Sophomore Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin HS) paced the University of Michigan men's track and field team at the Raleigh Relays on Friday and Saturday (March 25-26) as the Wolverines opened the outdoor portion of their 2005 campaign at North Carolina State's Paul Derr Track.
Porter registered a NCAA regional-qualifying time in his 110-meter hurdles season debut, claiming third place in the event with a time of 14.12. The Wolverine sophomore, who was just 0.04 seconds shy of his personal best, bettered the standard by 0.21 seconds. It was the second consecutive season that Porter earned the outdoor qualifying time in his first attempt.
Junior/sophomore Andrew Bauer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) recorded a personal-best 9:16.01 to claim fifth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Bauer trimmed 2.79 seconds from his previous best mark, which he registered at last season's Big Ten Championships.
The Wolverines also demonstrated their depth in the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles as multiple individuals earned high finishes. U-M boasted three among the top 11 in the dash, led by sophomore Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) -- in his first appearance since running the 400m leg on U-M's NCAA champion distance medley relay -- in third place with a time of 47.52. Waithe missed the NCAA qualifying standard by 0.26 seconds. Freshman Andrew Wechter (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby HS) and sophomore John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) posted times just shy of their personal bests in the event. Wechter clocked 48.43 -- 0.42 seconds off his personal best -- to place eighth while D'Arcy took 11th place with a time of 48.72 -- 0.28 shy of his best mark.
U-M put three individuals among the top 15 in the intermediate hurdles with senior captain Seth Waits (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Ostego HS) setting the pace in ninth place with a time of 53.55. Fifth-year senior David Battani (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) clocked 53.89 to net 13th place in his first hurdles race of the season, while sophomore/freshman Chris Stowe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) rounded out the top 15 with a time of 54.36.
The Wolverines will head to Atlanta, Ga., next Saturday (April 2) to make their third consecutive appearance at the annual Yellow Jacket Invitational.
