IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Michigan fifth-year senior captain Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edward HS) was named the Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Year at the conclusion of the Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Sunday (March 6) in recognition of his successful senior campaign. Bertin is the first Wolverine wrestler to garner the prestigious honor since its inception in 1986.

While Iowa claimed Big Ten Wrestler of the Year honors 11 times over the first 16 years, Bertin's distinction marks the fourth different school recognized with the award in four years. Michigan has won just two other conference yearly awards -- former U-M head coach Dale Bahr earned the inaugural Coach of the Year award in 1988, while Joey Gilbert claimed Freshman of the Year honors in 1990.
Bertin, along with the Wolverines' other seven NCAA qualifiers, will return to the mat next weekend (March 17-19) for the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Competition is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CST at the Savvis Center.
