Michigan Suffers Setback to Ohio State in Road Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 64 University of Michigan men's tennis team was unable to come away with a victory in its final road contest of the regular season, as the Wolverines dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 30 Ohio State Saturday afternoon (April 16) at the Stickney Tennis Center. Michigan (12-9, 5-3 Big Ten) was swept in doubles play and managed just one victory in singles action en route to its fourth straight loss against the Buckeyes (15-6, 6-1 Big Ten).
The Wolverine tandem of sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) fell short in its attempt to upset the nation's No. 1-ranked team of Scott Green and Ross Wilson, losing 8-4 at the top doubles slot to give Ohio State the early momemtum. OSU's Chris Klingemann and Devin Mullings slipped by senior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) 8-6 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Buckeyes.
Maravic, ranked 119th nationally in singles, evened the score at 1-1 with a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 53 Atas at No. 2 singles. Maravic now holds team-high totals in overall wins (18-12) and dual match victories (13-8) in 2004-05.
Michigan would not taste victory again, however, as Ohio State was victorious on the five remaining courts. The Buckeyes earned straight-set victories at Nos. 3 and 1 to pull ahead, with Klingemann defeating sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS), 6-2, 7-5, and No. 52 Devin Mullings handing Hung a 7-6(4), 6-1 loss at No. 1. The clincher came at the No. 5 position, as Wilscon battled back to defeat Peretz 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The Wolverines close out the regular season next weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan will host Indiana on Saturday (April 23) and Penn State on Sunday (April 24). Both matches are scheduled to start at noon.
