McLaughlin Leads U-M to 10th-Place Showing at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Using a career-best one-under 71 from sophomore Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), the University of Michigan men's golf team recorded a final round team tally of 298 today (Sunday, April 17) to close out the Boilermaker Invitational with a 10th place showing on the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
The Wolverines finished the 54-hole tournament with a team total of 900. After opening with a 306 in Saturday's first 18 holes, the Maize and Blue rallied in the second dropping 10 strokes, with an even-par 73 from freshman Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and a one-over 73 from sophomore Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's) to tally its tournament best-round tally of 296. With the help from McLaughlin's career-best round, the Wolverines closed out the tournament with a 298.
For the third time this season, McLaughlin led all Wolverines, tied for 29th with a 224 total. After opening with a 77 in the first round, he carded a 76 in the second round to sit tied for 41st after the first day of play. He rallied in the final round, producing a career-best one-under 71 to move him up 12 spots and close out with a 224 total.
Dore finished a stroke behind McLaughlin with a 225 total and tied for 32nd. He sandwiched rounds of 76 with a one-over 73 in the second round. Fifth-year senior Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) tied for 34th with a 226 total after descending all three of his rounds. He opened with a 77, had a 75 in the second and closed out with a two-over 74 in the final round.
Schaetzel, who tied for 43rd with a career-best 228 54-hole total, was the Wolverine first-day leader after rounds of 76 and even-par 72, as he was tied for 19th (148). Struggles found him in the final round as he tallied an 80 to close out the tournament. Junior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) tied for 60th with a 235 total (78-80-77).
Competing as individuals, freshman Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) tied for 32nd with a 225 (74-78-73), while sophomore Will Kendall (Gerrards Cross, England/Oundle School) tied for 43rd with a 228 (75-82-71).
Missouri (289-287-285) took the team title with a three-under 861 54-hole performance. Host Purdue (291-293-285) was the runner-up at 869, while Illinois (290-298-292) was third at 880. The medalist honor was taken by Purdue's Johan Edin, who was playing as an individual. After rounds of 70 and 74 to open the tournament, he shot a nine-under 63 in the final round to take the individual title by four strokes with a nine-under 207 total. Indiana's Jeff Overton (68-74-69) was second at 211 and Missouri's Ben Scott (68-74-69) was third at 212.
The Wolverines will close out the regular season with a trip westward to East Lansing, Mich., Saturday and Sunday (April 30-May 1) for the 2005 Bruce Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at Forest Akers West Course.
