NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Senior defensive tackle Gabe Watson (Novi, Mich./Southfield HS) of the University of Michigan football team has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2005 Lott Trophy, announced today (Tuesday, April 19) by the IMPACT Foundation of the Pacific Club.

One of seven Big Ten Conference players named to the watch list, Watson became a starter on the defensive line for the first time in 2004. He started 11 of the 12 games while helping anchor the middle of the defensive line, registering career highs with 37 tackles and seven tackles for loss. He earned All-Big Ten first team honors by the coaches and second team by the media last season.
The Lott Trophy is in its second year and is given to a player who exhibits the same characteristics that Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. It is the only college award that is based on both performance and character.
After the list is narrowed down to three finalists, the Lott Trophy will be awarded at a banquet on Dec. 11, 2005, at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Calif.
