OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Two members of the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan softball team have been honored with invitations to the 2005 Women's National Team Selection Camp from June 13-17 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., as announced today (Tuesday, May 10) by the Amateur Softball Association and USA Softball.
Michigan coach Carol Hutchins and All-America second baseman Tiffany Haas (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) have been afforded the opportunity to represent America in various international events over the summer of 2005. Hutchins is one of nine coaches selected among a 16-member pool that will work the camp, select the national and elite team for this summer as well as coach both teams in various capacities. Haas is one of 32 initial athletes invited to the camp and could be selected for either the 18-member USA Softball National team or 16-member Elite team.
Following the five-day camp in mid-June, the National Team and Elite team open up their summer circuit. The National Team plays an exhibition vs. Australia on July 12 in Irvine, Calif., before going to represent the United States against the world's best at the World Cup of Softball (July 14-18) in Oklahoma City, Okla., and the Japan Cup (July 16-Aug. 5) in Yokohama, Japan. Michigan's Hutchins will serve as an assistant coach for the Japan Cup.
The Elite team will compete in the Canada Cup (June 29-July 11) in Surrey, B.C., and the inter-continental Spain Cup July 20-28 in Madrid, Spain. Michigan's Hutchins will be the Elite team's head coach for the Canada Cup.
Haas is the only Big Ten Conference player selected to the camp after finishing her regular season hitting a team-best .393 and leading the Big Ten with 77 hits, 53 runs and 16 doubles. Haas was an NFCA All-America third-team selection as a sophomore a year ago.
The Women's Selection Committee will announce the remaining athletes invited to the selection camp on May 18.
