Schaetzel Advances to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying

Editor's Note: Schaetzel shot 75-72/147 to finish 12 strokes out of a playoff for the Atlanta sectional's sixth qualifying spot. Matthews (76-75/151) and Dietz (78-78/156) fell shy of qualifying at the Columbus, Ohio, sectional, where five of the six players who shot 137 filled out the group of 20 qualifiers.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's golfer Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) is one of three Wolverines, both present and former, to have made the first of two steps in qualifying for the 2005 U.S. Open.
At his local qualifying site (May 16), Schaetzel used a one-under 71 at the Rivermont Golf and Country Club in Atlanta, Ga., to move on to the sectional qualifier at the famed East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., Monday (June 6).
Former Wolverine Andy Matthews (1999-2002) earned medalist honors with a six-under 66 at the Wuskowhan Players Club in West Olive, Mich. (May 16) to qualify for the sectional, while former Wolverine Anthony Dietz (1990-93) qualified with a one-under 71 at the Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland, Mich. (May 9). Both Matthews and Dietz will play their sectional qualifier at Brookside Golf and Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, Monday (June 6).
Current Wolverine Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist) missed the cut after shooting a one-over 73 at the Wuskowhan Players Club in West Olive, Mich. (May 16). Current Wolverine Jimmy Wisinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS), who shot a three-over 75 and former Wolverine Scott Hayes (1998-2001), who shot a one-over 73, also missed the cut at the Wuskowhan Players Club.
With a record 9,432 players entered, local qualifiers were held at 107 sites that began May 9 and will follow with sectional qualifying at 14 sites starting May 30. The 2005 U.S. Open is to be played June 16-19 at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C.
With local qualifying now completed, approximately 750 entrants, including those exempt from local qualifying, will be eligible for sectional qualifying rounds. The sectional qualifying consists of 36 holes of stroke play throughout the U.S., England and Japan. The final field of 156 players is comprised of place-winners in sectional qualifying and those exempt from both the local and sectional qualifying rounds.
The U.S. Open is open to any professional, or to any amateur with an up-to-date USGA handicap index not exceeding 1.4.
In addition to the three U.S. Open local qualifiers, four other Wolverines are making headway for the 94th Michigan Amateur Championship. Michigan men's golf coach Andrew Sapp was a co-medalist with a one-under 71 in his Michigan Amateur qualifier at Washtenaw Country Club in Ypsilanti, Mich. (May 17) and Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic) was also a co-medalist after his five-under 67 at the Gowanie Golf Club in Mt. Clemens, Mich. (May 20).
Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) qualified for the field with a four-over 76 at Forest Akers West in East Lansing, Mich. (May 10), while incoming freshman Nick Pumford (St. Charles, Mich./St. Charles Community HS) qualified after his four-over 76 at the Bay City Country Club in Bay City, Mich. (May 19).
The 94th Michigan Amateur Championship will be Tuesday through Saturday, June 21-25, at Muskegon Country Club in Muskegon, Mich. Following the qualifying rounds, the amateur championship will have 156 players in the championship field which will play 36 holes of stroke play. The top 64 will advance to the match play bracket.
