ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan junior second baseman Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS), a two-time All-Big Ten Conference first team selection and an all-tournament selection at both the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Atlanta Regional this season, was named winner of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Player of the Year Award for District V that covers Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The announcement was made Friday (June 10) in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Getz, one of nine district winners, shared Michigan's team lead by hitting .386 (88-for-228) as a junior and paced the squad with 29 stolen bases, the second best total in U-M history.
Getz was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft last Tuesday (June 7), and it marked the second time that Getz had been selected by the White Sox as they took him in the sixth round out of high school in 2002.
In the past two seasons as a Wolverine Getz, who transferred from Wake Forest after his freshman season in 2003, hit .375 (.374732) to rank third on the U-M all-time list behind Ken Hayward (.376, 1982-85) and Jim Paciorek (.37518, 1979-82).
Getz has had 51 multiple-hit games as a Wolverine including 22 three-hit games while scoring 110 runs, collecting 55 walks and stealing 44 bases. He also chipped in with 27 doubles, three triples and a pair of homers and had hits in 85 of the last 100 games.
