ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head water polo coach Matt Anderson announced on Monday (June 13) that Kelsey Haley (Menlo, Calif./Menlo HS) and Julie Hyrne (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) have both signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Wolverines for the 2006 season.
"It's nice to be able to round out our recruiting class with two of the top players from Northern California," said Anderson. "Julie is the type of player that is going to come in right away and have an impact and she will only get better playing with like players. She has the tough mentality to go with the strong offensive physical tools that we are looking for and is a great student so Michigan is a good fit for her. Kelsey has the type of defensive commitment that is going to allow her to take her game to the next level. Her quiet, steady demeanor is going to fit in well as she is going to come in with expectations to play as a freshman."
Haley, a driver, is a three-year letterwinner in water polo at Menlo High School in Menlo, Calif. As a senior in 2004, Haley was named both the Central Coast Section (CCS) MVP and the Peninsula Athletic League (PAL) MVP while leading her team to CCS and PAL league championships. Haley also earned first-team all-PAL honors in 2003 and 2004 and was a second-team selection in 2002. She was also a second-team all-CCS selection in 2003 and earned CCS honorable mention status in 2002. A member of the Stanford Water Polo Foundation club coached by Kyle Utsumi, Haley helped her team to a second-place finish at the 2004 senior nationals and a fourth-place showing at the 20-and-under nationals. She also earned four letters in swimming at Menlo.
Hyrne, a center from San Jose, Calif., was a four-year letterwinner at Archbishop Mitty High School and was a member of the San Jose Splash under head coach Lou Tully. As a senior in 2004, Hyrne was named team captain and earned MVP honors at Archbishop Mitty. She was also a three-time All-West Catholic lead first-team selection (2002-04) and a two-time first-team All-CCS member (2003-04). With the San Jose Splash, Hyrne earned All-America honorable mention status at the 2004 junior nationals and was a fifth-team All-American at the 2003 junior nationals. She also won four swimming letters at Archbishop Mitty.
