ANN ARBOR -- A quintet of University of Michigan hockey players from the 2005-06 roster have been invited to attend Team USA's or Team Canada's 2006 National Junior Team Evaluation Camps. Sophomore forwards Chad Kolarik (Abington, Pa.) and Kevin Porter (Northville, Mich.) and freshman defensemen Jack Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Mark Mitera (Livonia, Mich.) were asked to attend USA Hockey's camp Aug. 5-14. Freshman forward Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) will head to Hockey Canada's camp Aug. 10-15.
Rosters for Team USA and Canada will be selected between the end of the tryout camps and early December. The 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship is scheduled to run Dec. 26, 2005 to Jan. 5, 2006, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The USA Hockey training camp includes 43 players (four goalies, 15 defenseman, 24 forwards) and is being held in Lake Placid, N.Y. Porter is a U.S. World Junior Team veteran, having played in the 2005 IIHF World Junior Championship where Team USA placed fourth. Twenty-two current or former Wolverines have skated for Team USA in the WJC, including at least one representative from U-M in each of the past seven years. In 2005, U-M sent a program-best five players (Al Montoya, Matt Hunwick, Mike Brown, T.J. Hensick, Porter) to the WJC. Should Porter be named to USA's roster he would become the 10 Michigan player to participate in multiple World Junior Tournaments. The camp will feature eight international scrimmages with a split squad of the best American players under the age of 20 facing off against Sweden and Finland.
Team Canada, which won the 2005 WJC gold medal, has asked 44 players (four goalies, 16 defensemen, 24 forwards) to attend its development camp, which will take place in Whistler, British Columbia. Cogliano is one of only three players from the college hockey ranks to be invited. Six current or former Wolverines have played for Canada's national junior team. Jeff Tambellini most recently competed for Canada at the 2004 WJC. Canada will only practice and not compete in formal exhibition contests.
