TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team opened its preseason schedule with a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Virginia on Tuesday (April 16) at the Keystone Rd. Soccer Complex. The game was played in four 30-minute periods and saw the Wolverines bounce back from a 1-0 deficit by scoring a pair of goals in the final session.
The Cavaliers, who outshot Michigan 19-17, grabbed a one-goal lead in the second period after Kristen Weiss took a pass from Jess Rostedt and put it past freshman goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker HS). Virginia held the lead until the fourth period, when senior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) took a serve up the right side and drilled a ball off the far post and into the net to tie the score at 1-1.
Sophomore Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) provided the game-winner later in the period, as she collected a pass from sophomore Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) and beat the UVA goalkeeper off the dribble to put U-M on top 2-1.
Michigan's final tuneup before the regular season will be this Friday (Aug. 19), as the Wolverines host Detroit at 4 p.m at the U-M Soccer Field.
