Avant, Massey Elected 2005 Football Captains

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head football coach Lloyd Carr announced today (Monday, Aug. 22) that two seniors have been selected by their teammates as captains of the 126th Wolverine football team. Fifth-year senior defensive tackle Pat Massey (Brecksville, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) was selected as the defensive captain and fourth-year senior wide receiver Jason Avant (Chicago, Ill./Carver HS) will represent the offensive side of the ball.

Massey has started a team-leading 21 games on defense, recording 65 career tackles, 15 tackles for loss, nine sacks and four pass breakups. He is a three-year letterman who can play both defensive tackle and end. Massey started all 12 games at defensive end in 2004, tallying a career-best 37 tackles, five sacks and one pass breakup. He also blocked two field goals last season.
Captains Notes
Avant is the first wide receiver selected captain during Lloyd Carr's tenure. The last wide receiver to be elected captain was Walter Smith in 1994.
Avant is the third wide receiver to become captain since Bo Schembechler became head coach in 1969, joining Smith and Anthony Carter (1982).
Avant is the first Illinois native selected captain during Carr's head coaching career.
Massey is the fifth defensive lineman selected captain during Carr's tenure, joining Grant Bowman (2003), Eric Wilson (2000), Rob Renes (1999) and Juaquin Feazell (1998).
Massey is the third Ohio native named captain for the Wolverines during Carr's coaching career, joining 2002 co-defensive captains Grant Bowman and Carl Diggs.
Head coach Bo Schembechler introduced co-captains at Michigan in 1970. The last individual captain was Jim Mandich, a 2005 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame.
