Kohlmeier, Michigan Win Titles at Great Meadows Invite

THE PLAINS, Va. -- Led by individual winner Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's), the University of Michigan women's cross country team opened its 2006 season with a first-place team finish at the Great Meadows Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 10). The Wolverines placed seven of their 12 runners in the top 10 and posted a score of 17 points (1-2-3-5-6), just two shy of perfect, in the five-team event hosted by Georgetown.
Kohlmeier, a sophomore, crossed the finish line with a winning time of 17:14, 10 seconds ahead of redshirt freshman Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey), who was 10 seconds ahead of senior/junior Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett), as the Wolverines swept the top three spots.
Also finishing in the top 10 were junior/sophomore Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) in fifth (17:38), fifth-year senior Ana Gjesdal (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) in sixth (17:41), senior/junior Jessie Stewart (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) in seventh (17:44) and redshirt freshman Claire Otwell (Traverse City, Mich./Central) in eighth (17:44).
U-M had three runners making their cross country debuts as Wolverines -- Edwards, Otwell and sophomore Lisa Uible (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hills), who came in 14th (18:19).
The Wolverines compete in the Michigan State Invitational on Friday (Sept. 16) at 2 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
