EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Paced by the Wolverine duo of senior Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) and junior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team opened its 2005-06 season with a solid sixth place showing today (Sunday, Sept. 18) at the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Course. The Maize and Blue recorded descending rounds throughout the 54-holes as they tallied a 914 tournament total after rounds of 309, 304 on Saturday and today's final round 301.
Individually for Michigan, Schmucker led the charge as she was 11th with a 223 54-hole total. She opened with a two-over 74 in the first round, which included 14 pars and followed with a four-over 76 in the second round. She rallied in the final round firing a one-over 73, which included 11 pars and three birdies, to lead Michigan.
Broderick followed just a stroke behind her teammate as she was 12th with a 224 tournament total. She carded an opening round of six-over 78 as two double-bogeys marred the first 18 holes. She came back firing in the second round firing an even par 72, as her four birdies helped pace the round. In the final round she closed with a strong two-over 74, which included 15 pars and a birdie.
Sophomore Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) opened with an 80, but posted a career-best even par 72 in the second round as her two birdies erased to two bogeys to go along with her 14 pars. But struggles found her in the final round as she closed out with an 82 for a career-best 234 54-hole total good for a tie for 37th. After opening with a five-over 77 in the first round, junior Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) found struggles in the second round posting an 84. She rallied in the final round firing a two-over 74 giving her a 235 total and a tie for 40th finish.
Other Wolverines at the Mary Fossum included: senior Kelly Easton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS), tied for 73rd with a 250 total (86-84-80) and redshirt-sophomore Rose Cassard (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS), who competed as an individual, 78th with a 255 total (87-80-88).
Host Michigan State (299-295-295/889) led from start to finish as they closed out with an eight-stroke victory of Southern Methodist (294-301-302/897). Northwestern was third at 901 (306-292-303). Individually, Northwestern's Jennifer Hong (70-76-74) and Kent State's Becky Wood (76-71-73) tied for the medalist spot with four-over 220 54-hole tournament finishes.
The Wolverine continue their trek through Big Ten country with a visit to Bloomington, Ind., Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 24-25) for the 2005 Lady Northern Invitational at the IU Golf Course, which is the host site for the 2006 Big Ten Championships in late April.
