Dobbyn's Two Second-Half Goals Lift U-M Past Oakland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team won a 3-2 decision over Oakland University on Sunday (Sept. 25) at OU Soccer Field. Sophomore forward Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) netted two goals, including the game-winner at 73:03. Freshman Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) added her third goal of the season for the Wolverines. Freshman goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) earned her first career victory, making four saves in the contest.
Oakland struck first at 17:11 as senior Kristi Swaving took a cross from junior Jill Horan and put Oakland up 1-0. Michigan came right back less than 10 minutes later at 26:27 as Underwood took a pass from junior Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) and slipped a shot past Oakland goalkeeper Jessica Howard from 10 yards out.
Dobbyn gave the Wolverines the lead just after the start of the second half at 47:37. Following an Oakland foul, Dobbyn fired a free kick past Howard to put Michigan up 2-1. Oakland tied the game at 67:53 when sophomore Kristi Vandeberghe dribbled through the Michigan defense and scored on Gates.
The Wolverines bounced back quickly at 73:03. Dobbyn ripped a shot from nearly 40 yards out past Howard for the go-ahead goal, giving Michigan a 3-2 lead.
The Wolverines travel to Bloomington, Ind., to take on Indiana on Friday (Sept. 30) at Armstrong Stadium.

• Junior Katelin Spencer registered her second assist this season and the seventh of her career on Danelle Underwood's goal at 26:27.
• Sophomore Melissa Dobbyn tallied her second two-goal game of her career, and the second in two games. Dobbyn also scored the game-winner, her first of the season.
• Freshman Danelle Underwood netted her third goal of the year. Her three goals are the most by any freshman this season.
• Freshman Madison Gates earned her first career win against Oakland, making four saves and allowing two goals. She improved to 1-1-1 on the season.
• The Wolverines fired more than 20 shots for the second straight game and third time in four games. The Maize and Blue offense has generated more than 20 shots in four games this season, holding a 4-0 record in such games.
