DAYTON, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team recorded its first tie of the season with a score of 2-2 against the Dayton Flyers on Thursday (Sept. 29) on Bajuan Field.
Just 10:06 into play, the gamed looked promising for the Wolverines as senior Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Roslyn) served in a corner kick ball to junior Kevin Savitskie (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) at the near post for a perfectly timed header to the far post to beat the Dayton goalkeeper, Steve Ladislaw. The Flyers answered 2:36 later with a goal of their own when Terry Alvino blasted a ball past senior goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) to the upper 90 from 30 yards out, forcing a 1-1 score into intermission.
In the second half the Wolverines only took three shots, but one of them was a big goal by freshman Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day). The goal came at the 75:19 mark after the Wolverines won a ball in the back third of the field, allowing freshman Michael Holody (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) to pick up the ball and find a dashing Bonnell. Bonnell outran the defense by four yards, forcing a one-on-one breakaway and enabling him to strike a low ball from 19 yards out, making the score 2-1.
Once again, just 2:15 later, Dayton had a response for the Michigan goal when the Flyers took an indirect free kick from 35 yards out from the goal on the right side of the field, permitting Dayton's Jonathan Welsh to shoot a hard low shot past Dzubay to tie the game at 2-2.
Toward the end of regulation each goalie was tested, both making tremendous saves to prevent valuable scoring opportunities. Dzubay was the first goalie to be challenged at the 82:00 mark as Dayton's Nate Darr blasted a shot at the net, causing a deflection as it hit a Dayton player, forcing Dzubay to make an unbelievable save. Ladislaw's save came three minutes later, stopping a high shot from sophomore Tolu Olowolafe (Bear, Del./Glasgow) by knocking the ball out of bounds.
The Wolverines will continue their road trip, heading to St. Louis, Mo., to face the Saint Louis Billikens on Saturday (Oct. 1) at 7 p.m. CDT.

Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "It was a real fun game. Dayton is a real difficult team to play against if you don't match up with them well, and we were able to find the right match-up and played a real strong game. Both teams had chances to win it, and overall I thought it was a just result."
On the determining factor of the game ... "It was two contrasting styles. We were a team that looked to build out of the back and maintain possession in the front part of the field, and they're a team that plays very direct out of the back to a superb player in their forward, #15 Omar Jarun. He was the absolute difference in the game; without him they wouldn't be able to play that way."
On the impact from the first tie of the season ... "This was a good result for us. The University of Dayton and Bajuan Field is one of the more difficult places to get a result. They had 10 straight home victories, the didn't lose at all last year, the last time they lost at home was in 2003. What I like is that our team responded with the intensity and dealt with the hostile crowd very well and all the distractions that is provided with that, and we competed. We had chances to win it. Adam Bruh in the 109th minute had a 25-yard shot that just missed the goal by about three or four inches. Bruh played one of his best games of the season, which was great to see him get everything going for us."
On what to look for against Saint Louis ... "More than anything it's a different style. Saint Louis is going to play and build out of the backfield, and we match up with it quite well, because that's how we want to play also. I think you're going to have a great soccer game, and more than anything we need to handle all the distractions that's will pop up with this being such a big game on the road."
