CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team closed out the tournament portion of its 2005-06 schedule by traveling to the University of Miami to compete in the Miami Invitational, Saturday through Monday (Jan. 14-16) at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Three other quality teams joined the Wolverines at the three-day event -- the host Hurricanes, Duke and Texas -- all of which are ranked in the top 40 in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Michigan, ranked No. 48 in the nation, was led by its top doubles team of junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija). The Wolverine tandem went undefeated in its three doubles matches during the weekend, including one victory over a nationally ranked pairing.
Hung and Maravic began the event with an 8-4 triumph over Joey Atas and Ludovic Walter of the eighth-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Saturday (Jan. 14). The second day of action saw Hung and Maravic edge out Luigi D'Agord and Vivek Subramanian of No. 39 Miami by a score of 9-8(6). The U-M pair capped off the tournament with an impressive 8-5 victory over No. 34-ranked Travis Helgeson and Michael Venus of the 22nd-ranked Texas Longhorns this morning (Monday, Jan. 16).
Hung and Maravic, who ended the 2004-05 season ranked No. 58 in national doubles rankings, hold a team-best 7-3 record heading into the dual match season. The two are 19-9 for their career as a doubles team.
Freshman Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) was the lone Michigan victor in singles, as he earned perhaps his biggest win of his young career with a 7-6(8), 6-3 decision over Luis Diaz Barriga Ibanez of Texas on Monday. DePietro heads into the dual match season with a 4-5 singles record.
The Miami Invitational was based on a dual match format, where teams square off against each other but the outcome of the match is not scored as a team effort. However, each match counts toward the individual players' records and rankings.
The Wolverines open their dual match season next Saturday (Jan. 21) with a doubleheader at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan will begin the day against Western Michigan at 10 a.m. and close with Ball State at 6 p.m. The U-M women's team will square off against DePaul between the two men's matches beginning at 2 p.m.
