BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Mike Woods (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest HS) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team blazed his first career NCAA automatic-qualifying time in the mile run at the Boston Indoor Games on Saturday (Jan. 28) at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
The only collegiate athlete in the event, Woods clocked 3:57.87 -- the nation's second-fastest mile time of the season by a collegian -- to claim sixth place among the 12-man field. It was the second sub-4:00 mile of his career; he missed his personal best, which he recorded at last summer's Junior Pan American Games, by just 0.39 seconds.
Woods' time was a two-second improvement on the automatic qualifying standard and lists as the second fastest mile time by a collegiate athlete this season, only 0.47 seconds behind Iona's Richard Kiplagat leading mark. It was Woods' second NCAA qualifying performance in consecutive weekends, adding to the provisional-qualifying 7:58.55 he registered Jan. 21 in the 3,000-meter run at the Red Simmons Invitational.
Woods was one of three Wolverines in the event as former standouts Nate Brannen and Kevin Sullivan also posted solid times in the early-season meet. Brannen clocked 3:57.17 in a fourth-place effort, while Sullivan took seventh in 3:58.07. Kenya's Elkanah Angwenyi won the event in a time of 3:55.95.
Woods will join his teammates next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 3-4) as the Wolverines travel to South Bend, Ind., for the annual Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center.
