ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Andre Barnes (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), senior/junior Adam Kiesler (Rochester, Ill./Rochester HS) and senior captain Brad Miller (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) all captured individual crowns as the University of Michigan men's track and field team opened its 2006 campaign by hosting the Jack Harvey Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 7) at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Barnes, in his collegiate debut, registered a time of 50.65 to pace the six-man field in the 400-meter dash and collect his first collegiate victory for the Maize and Blue. The U-M freshman ran in the faster of two heats, beating runner-up Fred Blackwell of Eastern Michigan to the line by 0.18 seconds.
Kiesler also claimed his first collegiate win, taking the long jump title with a mark of 22-5 1/4, just over six inches short of his personal best. The performance was an improvement of his third- and second-place showings from the previous two seasons.
Miller shared the high jump crown with Eastern Michigan's Adam Kring as both athletes posted a solid season-opening 6-9 3/4, bettering the 10-man field by two inches. Like Barnes and Kiesler, it was the first collegiate win for Miller, who claimed runner-up honors six times during the 2005 indoor season.
Sophomore Andrew Wechter (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby HS) missed his 800-meter personal best by just 0.56 seconds to take second place in the event with a time of 1:55.67. He nearly caught Eastern Michigan's Corey Nowitzke at the line, finishing a slim 0.31 seconds behind the Eagle runner.
The Maize and Blue will continue the 2006 campaign next weekend, heading across town for the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 14) at Bob Parks Track in Ypsilanti, Mich.
