Michigan Loses Emotional Battle to Indiana

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior captain Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) tied the score at 1-1 in the 61st minute, but the University of Michigan women's soccer team allowed the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute as Indiana handed the Wolverines a 2-1 loss on Parents Day (Sunday, Oct. 1) at the U-M Soccer Field. Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) was solid in goal, making four saves in a losing effort.
In an extremely physical match, Michigan battled with the Hoosiers down to the wire. The Wolverines opened the scoring chances in the first half when Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) made a run to the far post and sent a header just wide in the 31st minute. Minutes later, Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) secured a pass and fired a shot just over the bar.
The best chance for the Wolverines came in the 41st minute when Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) sent a cross into the middle of the box to Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School), who attempted a volley that was stopped by Indiana goalkeeper Stacey Van Boxmeer.
Indiana carried the shot advantage, 5-4, and the two teams headed into the second half in a scoreless stalemate.
The Wolverines responded to the score with a flurry of chances and the eventual equalizer. In the 61st minute, Michigan's pressure earned a corner. Coffman ripped the long set piece to the far post to Spencer, who leaped and pounded a header over Van Boxmeer to tie it at 1-1. The Wolverines dodged a bullet following the restart as the Hoosiers carried the ball in and found the post with their chance.
Indiana took the lead for good in the 75th minute. The Hoosiers went on the counterattack down the left flank and the cross went directly to Arnold, who volleyed a shot off the top of the crossbar. The rebound bounced right back to the middle of the box and Christie Kotynski put in the go-ahead score at 74:46.
Michigan stayed resilient and pushed for the tying score. Coffman created an opportunity with the dribble, but her rocket clanged off the outside of the post and out. Michigan's final chance came on a Coffman corner that Indiana turned away.
U-M next heads on the road as it travels to Wisconsin for a Friday evening (Oct. 6, 7 p.m. CDT) contest at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis.
