ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior captain Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) tied the score at 1-1 in the 61st minute, but the University of Michigan women's soccer team allowed the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute as Indiana handed the Wolverines a 2-1 loss on Parents Day (Sunday, Oct. 1) at U-M Soccer Field. Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) was solid in goal, making four saves in a losing effort.
In an extremely physical match, Michigan battled with the Hoosiers down to the wire. The Wolverines opened the scoring chances in the first half when Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) made a run to the far post and sent a header just wide in the 31st minute. Minutes later, Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) secured a pass and fired a shot just over the bar.
The best chance for the Wolverines came in the 41st minute when Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) sent a cross into the middle of the box to Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School), who attempted a volley that was stopped by Indiana goalkeeper Stacey Van Boxmeer.
Indiana carried the shot advantage, 5-4, and the two teams headed into the second half in a scoreless stalemate.
A Michigan defensive breakdown led to the Hoosiers' first score just 2:22 into the second half. A long switch sailed into the 18-yard box where Kristin Arnold stood all alone and placed a shot into the net to give IU a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines responded to the score with a flurry of chances and the eventual equalizer. In the 61st minute, Michigan's pressure earned a corner. Coffman ripped the long set piece to the far post to Spencer, who leaped and pounded a header over Van Boxmeer to tie it at 1-1. The Wolverines dodged a bullet following the restart as the Hoosiers carried the ball in and found the post with their chance.
Indiana took the lead for good in the 75th minute. The Hoosiers went on the counterattack down the left flank and the cross went directly to Arnold, who volleyed a shot off the top of the crossbar. The rebound bounced right back to the middle of the box and Christie Kotynski put in the go-ahead score at 74:46.
Michigan stayed resilient and pushed for the tying score. Coffman created an opportunity with the dribble, but her rocket clanged off the outside of the post and out. Michigan's final chance came on a Coffman corner that Indiana turned away.
U-M next heads on the road as it travels to Wisconsin for a Friday evening (Oct. 6, 7 p.m. CDT) contest at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the play of senior forward Judy Coffman ... "She created chances in the box a couple of times. Unfortunately, Indiana played well. We still have seven games left and our goals are certainly still attainable."
On Indiana's two goals ... "The second goal was a set piece. [Indiana] lives and dies on set pieces; that is how they beat Ohio State. The first goal was a defensive breakdown, and you can't afford to make mistakes like that against a good team. We played well against the wind and held them in the first half, which was our goal, but giving up the goal right off the bat to start the second half was tough."
U-M Senior Midfielder Katelin Spencer
On her second-half goal ... "It was a beautiful service. Judy (Coffman) has been serving some great balls. I think it was about time somebody finished and scored off a set piece. I was in the right place at the right time and wanted to put it in."
On the outlook for the rest of the Big Ten season ... "We are very positive about the rest of the season. I'm very hopeful about what we can still do. The Big Ten is a conference where anything can happen. Every single game is huge and it's going to be hard and we know that. Every team is going bring something different. We know that at any time Indiana could slip up against somebody we beat. We need to take it one game at a time and keep in mind that anything can happen. We can still win this thing. We just have to do what we need to do every day and win games."
U-M Sophomore Defender Skylar Andrews
On today's loss ... "It is very tough and our team played very hard. It was a gritty game that we had to fight through, and it really shot our energy when they scored that second goal because we were ready to come back and score. Their second goal really hurt us."
On her chemistry with senior Lindsey Cottrell ... "We had all of last year to play together and we really got to know each other's styles and tendencies. This year we are more mature and all four of us have a lot of good communication in the back."
