Wolverines Have Strong Showing at EMU Classic

DEXTER, Mich. -- The third-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team wrapped up its regular season at the EMU Classic on Friday (Oct. 20). Only four Wolverines ran at the event, with three harriers finishing in the top nine spots. The 5,000-meter course was run at the Hudson Mills Metropark.
On a day with beautiful course conditions, junior/sophomore Natasha Luppov (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) led the way for the Michigan quartet, finishing sixth place overall with a time of 18:28. This was Luppov's second time running at the course this season, as she also participated in the Wolverine Open (Sept. 1). She was able to improve on her previous course time by 1:07 seconds.
Also finishing in the top 10 were junior/sophomore Lisa Canty (Highland, Mich./Milford) and junior/sophomore Lisa Montgomery (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson). Canty took eighth with a time of 18:46, and following closely behind was Montgomery, in ninth, clocking in at 18:48. Canty was able to shave 37 seconds from her time at the Wolverine Open, while Montgomery dropped an impressive 1:22 from her Wolverine Open mark.
Three Wolverine freshmen were able to run at the collegiate level for the first time, all running unattached and placing in the top-ten. Jennie Biewald (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) lead the way for the unattached freshmen, taking fourth place overall with a time of 18:21. Rachel Severin (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) was next to cross the line, placing fifth (18:24), and Alysha Valencia (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) crossed the line in 18:37, taking seventh.
Next week, the Wolverines travel to Bloomington, Ind., to bid for their fifth consecutive Big Ten Championship on Sunday (Oct. 29) at 10:45 a.m. Michigan had a preview of the IU Cross Country Championship Course earlier this year with a dominating performance at the Indiana Open.
